MJC Speech & Debate
Overview
About the Team
Welcome! Speech and debate is an activity focused on developing research skills, polishing your speaking style, and thinking on your feet. Many students who participate find themselves intellectually invigorated and often get scholarship and career opportunities. You are probably familiar with many people who have a background in forensics: Chadwick Boseman, Idina Menzel, Billy Eichner, Sonya Sotomayor, Kal Penn, Oprah Winfrey, and many more!
The Modesto Junior College Intercollegiate Speech and Debate team is a co-curricular activity and Communication Studies course sponsored by the Department of Communication Studies and the School of Arts, Performance, and the Humanities.
Join the Team
Participation is open to any student enrolled at MJC! Students on the team prepare competitive events including platform speeches, oral interpretation, debate, and limited preparation. Students use these events to compete in tournaments at other community colleges and four-year universities.
MJC students can join the team by enrolling in COMM 105: Intercollegiate Speech and Debate through Pirates Net. It is a 3 unit course offered every spring and fall semester. Students can take the class up to 4 times.
